On October 7th 2001, the New York Rangers faced off against the Buffalo Sabres in the first game played at Madison Square Garden after the tragedy that struck New York City on September 11th, 2001. During the pregame ceremonies the Rangers Captain Mark Messier would don the iconically famous fireman's hat, an image that defined the time period for Hockey fans. In 2007, MeiGray sold privately the Jersey that was photomatched to the ceremony. The Rangers would go on to win the contest 5 - 4 and Messier finished with one assist. Following the game the Jerseys worn were auctioned off to benefit the Twin Towers fund, with this Jersey being the most expensive of the available jerseys. This Jersey comes with a Glen Sather, Ranger's GM, LOA confirming its wear by Messier. We can confirm that this jersey was purchased directly from the Rangers charity auction following the contest. The jersey has been signed by Messier on the number "1" on the backside of the jersey in black felt tip marker. There are three known Jerseys issued for this contest, one of which was photomatched by MeiGray as the ceremony Jersey. This however, is the only jersey known that was authenticated as being used during this contest by Glen Sather, Rangers GM. This jersey is one of the premier Game Used Hockey Jerseys of the 21st century, if not of all time. A portion of the winning bid will be donated to the Steven Siller Tunnel to Towers Foundation. The Jersey comes with full MeiGray Certification as well.
