Lou Gehrig, the epitome of humility, earned the title “The Iron Horse” for his unrelenting work ethic and dedication to his team. He also amassed a resume that made him one of the greatest baseball players of all time.

Lou Gehrig played his first full season of baseball in 1925 and is the foundation to the storied Yankees Franchise. Appearing in 7 consecutive All Star Games, winning the Triple Crown in 1934, a 2 time American League MVP, Earning the title of Yankee Captain and winning 6 World Championships, would be more than enough to solidify your name in history. The one accomplishment that will always remind us of his dedication to winning and contributing to his team is his consecutive streak of 2,130 games…A Streak that began in 1925.

Steiner Auctions is proud to present the actual 1925 contract offered by the New York Yankees American League Baseball Club to a young Henry Louis Gehrig. This 92 year old artifact is in extraordinary condition. The contract exhibits a faint, yet definitive resemblance of a tri-fold pattern typically found on baseball contracts of this era. The contract was stored flat over the 92 year span and now exhibits a more natural two fold appearance.

The first page of the artifact reads “ American League of Professional Baseball Clubs Uniform Players Contract” and features the player name, Henry L. Gehrig (Lou’s legal first name) of “New York City” typed on the front of the artifact. The artifact also specifies the amount of money, $3,750, Lou Gehrig was to receive for the 1925 season for his “Skilled services during the playing season of 1925, including the World’s Series or any other official series…”. The interior of the artifact features a signature of Jacob Ruppert that was executed by Ed Barrow, the President of the New York Yankees. This was a common business practice as it related to contracts in that era. The interior also features a very rare “H.L. Gehrig” signature on the player acceptance line.

This Lou Gehrig/New York Yankee artifact is one of the most significant pieces to be offered in the collectible space. The artifact represents the start of Lou Gehrig’s historic run with the New York Yankees and also marks the beginning of his consecutive game streak, a streak that would last for over 59 years. This contract, will be the featured piece in any collection. The contract has been in the possession of a private collector overseas. The private collector entrusted Steiner Auctions to market this special artifact so that it can find a home with a collector who will value it’s historical significance in baseball and Americana. In 2017, Lou Gehrig's 1924 American League Baseball Players contract, in similar condition, sold for a staggering sum of $480,000.00 in public auction. The contract comes with two letters of authenticity, PSA/DNA & JSA. Estimate $400,000+
