Although Gehrig attended spring training with the Yankees in 1924, the team couldn’t find him a permanent position, and management wanted him to get more seasoning in the minors. Accordingly, Gehrig signed on once more with Hartford, where he hit .369 with 37 home runs, 40 doubles and 13 triples in 134 games. When Hartford’s season ended, Miller Huggins once again invited Gehrig to join the Yankees in September.

This standard one-page "Uniform Agreement for the Assignment of a Player's Contract to or by a Major League Club" which assigned Gehrig to Hartford and then bought the “Iron Horse” into pinstripes stands among the most significant documents ever to emerge from the annals of baseball history, a collectible that almost stands in-line with the million-dollar document that transported Babe Ruth to the Yankees.

Here in this Agreement, the rights to New York's favorite son, Henry Louis Gehrig, are promised for Major League recall to the New York Yankees. The contract details and notes are in the handwriting of baseball Hall of Fame member Ed Barrow. Barrow has also fulfilled the signature obligation for Yankees President Jacob Ruppert on this one-of-a-kind document. A signature from the Hartford Athletic Corporation President completes the contract. The contract is dated April 24th, 1924 and stamped on the lower corner near the signatures in blue ink April 16, 1924 making this contract the earliest Lou Gehrig contract ever to come to public auction to date. Gehrig did not sign this version, which could indicate this copy was Gehrig's personal copy of the agreement.

Last year Lou Gehrig's 1924 New York Yankees contract sold for a staggering sum of $480,000.00 in public auction. The Yankees agreement, although singed by Gehrig, was dated August 30th, 1924 over four months after this Hartford Athletic Corporation contract.
