Of all the players on the 1980 US Olympic Hockey Team, Steve Christoff's name often doesn't get as mentioned nearly as often as it should. Twice Christoff found the back of the net in the Lake Placid tournament, first in a blow-out victory over Romania, and most notably to pull even with Finland in the Gold Medal match after fifteen minutes trailing due to an early Jukka Porvari goal. His short-handed assist to Mark Johnson concluded the American scoring in what would conclude as a four to two victory for the US. Had there been an MVP Award issued for the Gold Medal contest, Christoff would surely have been the recipient. This amazing Gold Medal comes from the 1980 Olympic Games which is still today considered one of the greatest moment in American Sports 35 years later. The format for the medal round meant that the United States and Sweden carried the result of their 2–2 preliminary round game into the medal round, where they would each play the Soviet Union and Finland to determine the final rankings. The United States vs USSR game, called the "Miracle on Ice" in the United States, is the best-remembered game of the tournament. The United States was down by a goal entering the third period then scored two to win 4–3. The US 4–2 defeat of Finland, in the final game of the tournament, earned the United States the gold medal.

After the formality of a Bronze medal match between the Soviet Union and Sweden concluded, Christoff stood on the podium as the National Anthem played with the presented Gold Medal slung proudly about his neck. Crafted by "Tiffany & Co.," the extraordinary prize offers world class aesthetics befitting its historic importance. The front of the medal shows a raised torch framed between the words "XIII Olympic Winter Games" and the Olympic rings. The reverse has raised text "Lake Placid 1980" and the engraved lettering "Ice Hockey, Steve Christoff." The medal measures three and one-eighth inches in diameter. Christoff removed the clasp and ribbon for display, but their absence in no way distracts from the visual or historical appeal.

This gold medal comes with a full letter explaining the significance of the accomplishment in which it was earned by the original recipient, Steve Christoff. This very medal has been on display at the Lake Placid Museum for the past few years and has been removed for the auction sale of this item and includes a copy of the loan transfer The Medal also comes with the original purchase receipt for $540,000.00.
