1960 Pittsburgh Pirates World Series Trophy attributed to Virgil Trucks. This elegant piece is the smaller version of the coveted World Series trophy (Commissioners Trophy) presented to players on the winning club every November. The prize is arranged upon a 2 1/2-inch tall, 7 1/4-inch in diameter black wooden base, whose surrounding gold-colored band reads "WORLD SERIES CHAMPIONS / PITTSBURGH PIRATES / 1960" Atop the black base, a 5"-diameter gold-colored band has a silver-colored baseball at its base and a very detailed gold crown figure at the top. The two World Series teams' (Yankees & Pirates) press pins are mounted on small poles on the 7" diameter black base, in front of the silver baseball. Surrounding the base are 16 gold-colored flags that bear the names of each Major League team at that time; the banners gradually ascend in size as they reach the back of the trophy. There is a Balfour manufacturer's sticker underneath the base. The 1960 Pittsburgh Pirates team featured eight All-Stars but was widely predicted to lose the World Series to a powerful New York Yankees team. In one of the most memorable World Series in history, the Pirates were defeated by more than ten runs in three games, won three close games, then recovered from a 7-4 deficit late in Game Seven to eventually win on a walk-off home run by HOFer Bill Mazeroski, a second baseman better known for defensive wizardry. The trophy is in mint condition. This truly important sports artifact is attributed to former All-Star player and 1960 Pittsburgh Pirates coach Virgil Trucks. In 1960 the trophies did not feature player names; however, the trophies were only available to players and coaches. The trophy comes to us from a collection in Shelby County, Alabama, where Virgil Trucks lived (Calera, AL) until his death in 2013. With supporting evidence, it is reasonable to attribute this trophy to Trucks. This amazing baseball relic is a necessary addition to any Pirates or general baseball collection.
