Hall of Fame great Willie Howard Mays Jr. began his professional baseball career with the Birmingham Black Barons of the Negro American League. He made his Major League debut with the New York Giants on May 25, 1951. He spent almost all his MLB career with the Giants, first in New York, then in San Francisco. Mays finished his career in 1972-73 with the New York Mets.

In the era before performance-enhancing substances, he was possibly the greatest all-around baseball player of all time. Mays placed second on The Sporting News's "List of the 100 Greatest Baseball Players", making him the highest-ranking living player. He has been an All-Star 24 times, a record shared only with Hank Aaron and Stan Musial. Mays retired with a lifetime batting average of .302 and 660 home runs. His lifetime total of 7,095 outfield putouts remains the major league record.

This Topps baseball card was Willie Mays’ first Topps card, his Topps rookie card. This card has PSA authentication, is PSA encapsulated, and is graded VG-EX 4.
