Presented is an extremely rare Joseph Hall purple border team cabinet photograph featuring the New York Giants of the National League posed in front of the stadium grandstand. Joseph Hall team cabinets have long been revered by collectors as the most highly prized of all nineteenth-century cabinet issues, and are universally regarded as the premier team cabinet-card series of the era. This is an exceptional example! The photograph is particularly striking, with the Manager in his bowler hat among the players in their wool collard uniforms. Along with individual player identifications, which correspond to numbers on their respective images, the mount is captioned: "New York Base-Ball Club, 1888." The photograph includes nineteen players, among them possibly the most outstanding of all nineteenth-century ballplayers; Buck Ewing. This example is in nice overall condition. It is bright and clean, with suitable photographic contrast and detail. The corners are soft from age (slightly more wear to the lower left), with foxing along the edges of the mount. The image is centered slightly to the top providing a large bottom boarder listing all members of the photograph. The reverse is entirely blank, with only a remnant of 130-year-old glue that has caused it to grade modestly when submitted for professional grading. This is the first example of a New York Giants Joseph Hall team cabinet that we have ever offered, and it is the first example that we can recall seeing a purple border cabinet offered publicly in the last decade! This is an extraordinary card, which would be a highlight in any advanced collection! Authentication by PSA (Encapsulated PSA 1 PR)
