PlAYER BIOS:

Harry Gilmer - A halfback/quarterback, Gilmer was a do-it-all player who earned All-America and SEC Player of the Year honors in 1945. He was also voted Most Valuable Player after leading Alabama to a 34-14 win over Southern California in the Rose Bowl. He accounted for 52 total touchdowns during his career, 19 rushing, 29 passing, two punt returns, one kickoff return and one interception return. He suffered just 22 career interceptions in 413 attempts. In 1946, he led the Tide in passing, rushing, interceptions, punt returns and kickoff returns. He was selected to the Tide?s Team of the Century, as a defensive back. His best game was against Kentucky when he rushed six times for 216 yards and was two-of-two passing for 50 yards. Gilmer finished 5th in the Heisman.

Bart Starr was a 17th round draft choice of the Green Bay Packers in 1956. Three years later, his playing time was still limited and his football future appeared in doubt. That?s when Vince Lombardi took over as the Packers coach, an event that may have saved Bart's NFL career.

Lombardi, in tireless study of films, found that he liked Bart's mechanics, his arm, his ball-handling techniques and, most of all, his decision-making abilities. Under Vince's careful nurturing, Starr gained the confidence to become one of the NFL's great field leaders.

By 1960, Starr led Green Bay to the Western Division championship, the first in a long string of successes for Starr and the Packers. From 1960 through 1967, Bart's "won-lost record" was a sizzling 62-24-4 and the Packers won six divisional, five NFL, and the first two Super Bowl championships. Although Starr seemed to receive minimal personal recognition for the team?s successes, knowledgeable football men knew who was making the Packers click. He was the perfect quarterback for his team. Because it was a balanced attack that he led, Starr's passes were limited ? remarkably, he never threw as many as 300 passes in any one season. This may have helped to create the illusion that he was only an average passer. The statistics, of course, do not bear this out. Starr held several NFL passing records, including the lifetime record of completing 57.4 percent of his passes over a 16-year period. He led the league in passing three times. He was the NFL's Most Valuable Player in 1966.He won MVP honors in both Super Bowls I and II. Bart was at his best in his many postseason appearances. After their first title loss to Philadelphia in 1960, the Packers never lost another playoff game under Starr.

Joe Namath - Even though a knee injury limited his senior season, he was still instrumental in leading the Tide to a national title in 1964. In the 1965 Orange Bowl game against Texas, Namath came off the bench to complete 18 passes for 255 yards and a pair of touchdowns to earn MVP honors in the 21-17 loss. He tied with Kenny Stabler for quarterback honors on the Tide?s Team of the Century and team of the decade for the 1960s. He went on to a Hall of Fame career with the New York Jets of the NFL, highlighted by a Super Bowl III MVP performance in 1969.

Steve Sloan is the only Alabama football player to earn honors as All-America, Academic All-America, play on a national championship team and earn an NCAA individual statistical title. He accomplished all of those feats in 1965 and then capped it all with an MVP performance in a 39-28 Orange Bowl win over Nebraska. His 153.8 passing efficiency ratio was the nation?s best in 1965. He finished 10th in the Heisman Trophy balloting in 1965.

Kenny Stabler - Selected to the All-America team in 1967, ?Snake? Stabler played on Tide teams that compiled a 28-3-2 record. In 1966, he quarterbacked Alabama to a perfect 11-0 season, including a 34-7 win over Nebraska in the Orange Bowl. Stabler completed 12 of 17 passes for 218 yards and rushed for 40 more while earning MVP honors. In his senior season of 1967, Stabler was named SEC Player of the Year by the Birmingham Quarterback Club and the Atlanta Touchdown Club. In 1992, Stabler and Joe Namath were selected as quarterbacks on the Tide?s All-Century team. He was a first-round selection by the Houston Astros in baseball, but turned down that offer to play football with the Oakland Raiders.

Jay Barker - The Johnny Unitas Golden Arm Award winner in 1994, Barker finished fifth in the Heisman Trophy balloting that season. He finished his career as the winningest quarterback in Alabama history, compiling a 34-2-1 record as the Tide?s starting quarterback. He earned All-America and consensus All-SEC honors his senior season. He was also the Birmingham News Offensive Player of the Year in the SEC and was a finalist for the Davey O?Brien Award, presented each year to the outstanding college quarterback.
