Shortly after his election to the Baseball Hall of Fame, Willie Mays took a job at the Park Place Casino (now Bally's) in Atlantic City, New Jersey, serving as Special Assistant to the Casino's President and as a greeter. In 1983, Mickey Mantle similarly went to work at the Claridge Resort and Casino, also in Atlantic City, as a greeter and community representative at golf tournaments and other charity events. When Baseball Commissioner Bowie Kuhn heard of this, he suspended both men from involvement in organized baseball on the grounds that any affiliation with gambling was grounds for being placed on the "permanently ineligible" list. However, both men were reinstated on March 18, 1985, by Kuhn's successor, Peter Ueberroth. Offered here is a Sports Illustrated magazine March 25, 1985 issue, which covers the story of the reinstatement of the two baseball legends. Signed by all three, Mays' and Mantle's signature appear in blue ink, Ueberroth's in black ink, each displaying 9/10 in strength. Item comes with full LOA from JSA X53996.
