Spring Fever Auction
A record-setting crowd of 38,281 attended the first game of the 1911 World Series at the Polo Grounds, just months old following a disastrous blaze which spelled the end of its previous incarnation mid-season. The New York Giants and the Philadelphia Athletics would fire their biggest guns for the opening contest, with Christy Mathewson and Chief Bender battling to a two to one victory for the home team. Here we find a tremendously scarce ticket from that battle at Coogan's Bluff. The ticket exhibits typical edge and corner wear and a punch hole near the right edge, but still presents wonderfully. There is some evidence on the reverse that the ticket may have been affixed into a scrap book, but mostly all glue or paper remnants are minimally visible. This ticket is one of only three known full tickets from Game one of this contest. Estimate $2000 - 3000.
